2000 CHEMISTRY VAN PROGRAM
for
HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHERS

CHEMISTRY VAN PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Chemistry Van Program is a collaborative effort between the Chicago Public Schools, Chicago State University, the Teachers Academy for Math and Science, and the University of Illinois - Chicago, collectively known as the Chicago Science Alliance.

The Chemistry Van Project has two components:

A Summer Teacher Inservice Institute. Each summer a two week inservice institute at Chicago State University will focus on training high school chemistry teachers in the delivery of chemistry laboratory experiments which can be accomplished during a 50 minute class period as well as instruction in the operation and use of modem chemical instrumentation. Selection of experiments and assessment activities will be identified so as to assist schools in preparation for IGAP and in the development of School Improvement Plans.

The Chemistry Van Teachers who complete the summer institute will be able to request the services of the Chemistry Van. The Van will deliver to the requesting teacher the materials, supplies and equipment necessary to perform any of the laboratory experiments which the teacher has performed during the summer institute. The Van will be driven by a teacher who is certified to teach in the Chicago Public School System and will be assisted by a pre-service student or graduate student from one of the universities. The driver and the assistant will be available to assist the school teacher with the set-up and performance of the experiment, if so requested.
